Busyness; idleness in motion

There has been a glorification of busyness in our day. An unhealthy love for motion. It makes us feel like we are doing something productive.  It might look like we’re doing something but often we are spinning our wheels but going nowhere. Busyness is a thief that is often fruitless.Sometimes we end up paying for it by having rootless relationships and no down time to quiet our hearts before the Lord. We get up on empty, run on full speed and end up in negative before the day is over. This is a fruitless way to live. The bible calls this kind of fruitlessness idleness. Idleness is often thought of as laziness but that is only one definition. When I looked into the bible I found that idle people weren’t usually doing nothing. Some of them were actually quit busy.  Busybodies that is. (II Thessalonians 3:11) They were busy getting into trouble, they were busy gossiping, they were busy making sure they were satisfied. (Ezekiel 16:49) They were not concerned with other people, like the poor. We should have nothing to do with this kind of fruitlessness.

Busyness seems to be a buzz word in our day. How are you? Busy, busy! The other person will say. What is it that we are busy with? Why are our schedules so cram packed? What is it that drives us to continue like that? Are these just fruitless deeds or do they have kingdom value? Even things that seem good can become just busyness. How can we be sure we are doing fruitful things and not eating of the bread of idleness?

Prayer.  We should spend time asking God what He wants us to do that day. Be willing to clear your schedule of your checklist. Chances are He won’t ask you to do anything earth shaking at first. Even a simple task can be of great significance to someone else.  We need to be obedient as if it were the only thing on our list. Ask the Lord to help you set up priorities for your family.  That can help you say yes or no to things people may want you to do. This helps keep your schedule from getting crazy and allows you to be open to moments God asks you to do something great.

This was a huge step for me. My goals are to be a life-giving wife to my husband and to teach my children well. A Christ-centered education is important. I want them to see the Lord in everything. Science, history, math, grammar, art… Taking time to mold their character according to the Word of God is of upmost importance to my husband and I. The only way we have time to do this is to be purposeful with how we spend our time. Taking a look at the goals we have for our family has made it easier to know what to say yes to and what to say no to.

I heard someone talk about schedules a few months ago.  He had some great points. He said don’t make a schedule according to what you want to get done but make a schedule according to who you want to become. If you want to be a person who serves the homeless, schedule time to do that. If you want to have more time for family, schedule it in. You will probably have to make sacrifices but you need to decide what is most important to you. That’s why having your priorities in place is important. As always pray about everything first. See if that what the Lord wants you to do. For years know I’ve wanted to take college classes but when I ask the Lord I hear “not yet”. It’s frustrating to me but I know He has my future in His hands. Only He knows why I must wait.

The bottom line is enjoy this season of life you’re in. Live life with eyes wide open. Not rushing from here to there just to complete a checklist of to do’s. Live the life God has given you. Enjoy it!
