The kids had to be at soccer practice in less than an hour. Since soccer is during dinner I decided to have the kids eat early. I didn’t want them running around on an empty stomach. I didn’t have time to cook the meal I planned, so I looked around the kitchen to see what I could throw together. We’ve been having a difficult time with our finances and it was three days til payday. The cupboards were looking a little thin. I knew I was going to give them hot dogs so I warmed them up and put them on the kids’ plates. I found some corn to warm on the stove then rummaged through the kitchen to find other odds and ends. I put some peanuts on the kid’s plates and set it in front of them.
They had no idea I was concerned about money and food. With happy hearts the kids were talking to each other about how the meal reminded them of Charlie Brown’s Thanksgiving. Joyfully one said “It’s like a feast!” A feast?! Those words rang in my head. A feast is a time of celebration. I was not celebrating. Don’t they understand how stressful this is?
Then I realized I had been so concerned about what we didn’t have I forgot to look at what we did have. I’ve been weighed down by the cares of this world and forgot to look fully into the eyes of Jesus. I haven’t been trusting in His promise of provision for my family and I. It took the eyes of a child to show me to look at how much we have. Not to focus on what we don’t have. They knew the meal was odd but they took it on with joy and had fun with it. Yet, here I was, with a long face and heavy heart I carried myself. I let the burdens of money weigh me down and take my joy. I was not looking to the Lord, I was looking at my circumstances.
Lord, open my eyes to see all you have given me. You have blessed me so much. Help me to see how much I have to give. Help me remember I don’t have to be a millionaire to give. I can give a smile, say hello, or give of my time. I can pray for others. I can be a friend. Help me to lean in to You to hear when you are asking me to give.
Help me to focus my eyes on you. Not looking at the waves of circumstances crashing around me. Help me to hear your loving voice pointing me in the direction to go. Let me always have a heart of thanksgiving to you for all you’ve done and all you’ve given me. Help me to forever trust you.
Where greed resides in me replace it with generosity. Where fear resides, replace it with trust. You are a loving Father who gives so much to His children. Forgive me for allowing anxiety fill my heart. Thank you for refocusing me. Help me to not take my eyes off You. I need you.
Thank you for all you have given me, Lord. I love you.
